From Your Editor, Wendy Schwartz
The Giants Gazette is Sequoia’s student driven school newspaper. The paper is parent edited and printed off-site, but students write the bulk of its content. All students are welcome to contribute, and articles can be typed or handwritten. There are due dates for each issue posted in Mr. Cannon’s room, but stories can be submitted at any time!
I started the Giants Gazette in the fall of 2005 with a two-fold objective: to give students a new opportunity to write and to provide meaningful communication about school events to parents. Writing has been the major focus of Sequoia’s school site plan for several years, and the goal for the Giants Gazette was to provide additional, creative ways for students to hone their skills. Submissions have varied (5th grader Aidan Cleary’s delightful description of his hard working night on the Balclutha, vibrant poems from Mrs. Kortbein’s class, Kindergartner Sophie Zaleski’s carefully printed field trip report) but all have been informative, thought out, and interesting.
Writing takes courage. I know many adults lack confidence in their own writing, let alone want to share it with 300 plus families. The students write and edit their submissions, and they set up interviews themselves. We thank and congratulate our contributors on their willingness to tackle a challenge, and we hope seeing their name in print in the Giants Gazette inspires them to make writing an important and enjoyable part of their lives.
We hope you find the Giants Gazette to be an informative way of keeping everyone in the school community “in the loop.”
